Germany  have entered the World Cup quarter-finals in South Africa on Sunday as they beat England  4-1 in their second round match.

Strikers Lukas Podolski and Miroslav Klose opended the scoring in the first half before England's Matt Upson gave his side their first goal of the contest to bring them within one.

Moments after Upson goal, England's Frank Lampart rattled the crossbar and scored, but had it denyed after the referee deemed it didn't go in. Video replay showed that it was in fact a goal.

Klose scored his goal at the 20' mark of the contest, bringing down a long ball and out-muscling defender Matt Upson before beating netminder David James for the goal.

Just 12 minutes later, midfielder Thomas Mueller found Podolski wide open and fed him the ball. Podolski beat James on the far post for the goal.

In the second half, German midfielder Thomas Mueller scored two goals inside four minutes to give the German's the commanding three-goal lead. He found the back of the net at the 67' mark, squeezing the ball past netminder David James, before netting his second just moments later.

The two sides have played just four games in the FIFA World Cup. They first met 44 years ago, when England used two extra-time goals for a 4-2 win in the final, and have also battled in 1970, 1982 and 1990.

The Germans went on to claim the title in 1990, while England hasn't won since 1966. Now, one of the two faces an early exit in South Africa.

To reach Sunday's stage, Germany defeated Ghana in its final match in Group D to advance, while England set up the showdown by finishing second in Group C to the United States on goal differential.

Sunday's other game has Group B winner Argentina against Group A runner-up Mexico. The victor will face Germany in the next round.
