Hundreds of left-wing and human rights activists took to the streets of Tel Aviv to protest against Israeli air strikes in Gaza that have left at least 230 people dead and scores other injured. The protesters, who marched from Tel Aviv's Cinematheque towards the Defence Ministry offices on Saturday night, faced horseback mounted police on the way, daily Ha'aretz reported.
Five of the hundreds of protesters, who believe that Israel's military action in Gaza does not protect its citizens or provide them security, were arrested by the police.
"No one can tell us that slaughtering the citizens of Gaza is meant to protect the citizens of Sderot and Ashkelon," Matan Kaminer, a student who participated in the march, told the daily.
Some protesters complained of extraneous use of force on the part of horse-mounted police, but overall the march remained non-violent.
Israeli Arabs also carried out several demonstrations across the country yesterday condemning excessive use of force and urging the international community to pressurise Israel to halt the offensive.
